Room 12 had a short, yet busy week! We were overjoyed to begin our week on Wednesday filled with sunshine and lots of outside play. The children enjoyed running, climbing, swinging on the monkey bars, and building sand cakes in the front and back yards. We loved watching Kora and Ayla play “performance” and sing their own creative songs to one another while performing in a talent show. Ella made three cakes in the sandbox, and Noah said, “Wow! Those are delicious chocolate cakes!” The children also worked on their drawing skills by completing their own complete pictures. Carter drew a sun, grass and flowers with crayons, while Wynter used pastels to make a complete garden. Wynter used great detail and even added faces to her flowers and two big suns. This activity helps the children use concentration and practice their ability to complete an idea from start to finish. They also enhance their fine motor skills and their creativity. Room 12 participated in a wonderful cooking project this week. Last Friday, the children began this project by sorting out M&M’s into cups by their color. Each child sorted one color of either mini M&M’s or regular sized M&M’s. Sorting and categorizing promotes early math skills such as color, shape, rows, columns and numbers. The children could see which color had the most M&M’s and which color had the least. Kayden observed that we did not have very many brown colored M&M’s, but Skyler said that we had a lot of blue M&M’s (her favorite color). After we sorted the M&M’s, the children created a tree out of all of the colors. They assigned a different item that makes up a tree to each color M&M. The yellow candies were the lemons, the red were apples, the green was grass, the brown was dirt, the blue was the sky, and the orange were oranges or tangerines. In addition, we used pretzel pieces as the bark of the tree. The children used critical thinking skills to connect conversations of Tu B’Shevat and drawing a picture to remember what parts make up a tree. They had a great time placing the M&M’s on the chocolate background (like our piece of paper) to create a complete picture. This activity relayed the themes of Tu B’Shevat, as well as a complete picture. At the end of the day, the children enjoyed a tasty chocolate snack. Thank you to Ella’s family for joining us in the classroom for a wonderful Shabbat celebration. We enjoyed singing songs, the blessings and reading stories with you all.
