Shalom Ulpanon Bet families,
We hope you had a restful long weekend, and perhaps opportunities to share with your children in honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The teachers were at school on Tuesday, doing some learning of their own. Farryl Dickter, a Speech and Language Pathologist and Educational Therapist, as well as Fran Walfish, a Social and Emotional Psychotherapist, both spoke with us about behavior, literacy and language development in young children. It was very informative. We continued to work on Winter, Choref, with picture flashcards that have winter vocabulary words, and we also played a memory game with Choref vocabulary words. We finished talking about Martin Luther King, Jr. by completing the journal page. The children drew pictures of love and friendship, two of the ideas we have been discussing as it pertains specifically to the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Some of the things the children said about him was that he wanted people with different skin color to use the same bathroom and the same water fountain; that he was a good guy and helped the black people by giving a speech; he was kind and people helped him. We began talking about Tu B’Shvat and learning about the different parts of the tree. We discussed what trees do --give us shade, furniture, flowers, fruit. Rabbi Josh visited us and talked about Tu B’Shvat. He told us a story about Choni, who planted a tree knowing that while he would not live long enough to enjoy its fruits, that many other people would be able to enjoy it years after it was planted. At the end of the story we learned that Choni's grandchildren enjoyed the fruit of the tree. We then learned about the word “Achrayot,” responsibility, that it also comes from the word “Acher” – the other and Achar-Kach- later and the lesson was: that we need to be responsible also for the ones who come after us. We read Lechi MiPoh, Mifletzet Yeruka (Go Away, Big Green Monster). We had Music with Ditza we enjoyed singing and dancing for Winter songs. Chloe was our Shabbat Ima. Due to the downpour of rain, we went to another Pre-K class where we sang Shabbat songs with Jen Shankman and her guitar and Rabbi Josh. Reminders: TOT SHABBAT is Saturday, January 21 at 10 a.m. in the Parenting Center. Liron is our Library Reader on Wednesday, January 25th. Olivia Marks is Shabbat Ima on Friday, January 27th. Picture Day is on Tuesday, January 31st at 9 am SHARP. Please bring your child dressed and ready BY 8:50 AM to the classroom. Or bring them directly to the temple at 9 am. Fathers and Grandfathers Week is February 6th-10th. If anyone’s Father or Grandfather would like to come speak to the class about what they do, we would welcome it. We also invite all Fathers and Grandfathers to join us throughout the week for classroom activities and a special Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom, Talia, Meirav and Gali
