Dear Ulpanon Bet Parents,
This week, we introduced the story of Purim discussed Queen Ester’s bravery in saving her people. We learned about King Achashverosh, who lived in a castle in the city of Shushan, Persia, Queens Vashti and Esther, the evil advisor, Haman, and Mordechai HaYehudi, brave and wise Mordechai. The children learned that Queen Vashti stood up for herself and told the King “No!” when he asked to prepare for yet another party. After sending Vashti away, King Achashverosh sought a new queen and found beautiful Queen Ester (who was hiding her Judaism and real name, Hadassah, in secret). We learning about the king’s evil advisor, Haman, who ordered everyone to bow down to him, and who was very angry when Ester’s Uncle Mordechai (who was openly Jewish) refused to do so. Haman advised/told King Achashverosh that the Jews were bad for not bowing down to him and that they needed to leave Shushan. He then cast a pur (lots) to choose a date for their expulsion. Mordechahi learned of Haman’s plan and enlisted Ester’s help. Ester gathered her courage, told Achashverosh that she was Jewish and that Haman’s plan was evil. King Achashverosh listened to his beloved queen and ordered Haman’s expulsion instead, thus saving the Jews of Shushan. New Purim vocabulary words for this week: masecha/masechot. matanot la’evyonim, keter, oznay haman, melech, malka,, mikrah Megillah, Megillat Ester, mishloach manot, laytzan, armon, tachposet/tachposot (mask/masks, gifts for the poor, crown, hamentaschen, king, queen, reading of the Megillah, Esther’s Megillah scroll, Purim basket, clown, castle, costume(s)). Character cut-outs with pictures of your children were sent home for you to decorate with your child after they choose a character from the Purim story. Please refer to information page and the kid-friendly Purim Story that was sent home along with each cut-out for additional details. The decorated cut-outs are due back to class by February 15th. Our Tu B’Shevat plants went home this week. Please remind your children to water and nurture their plants at home and to report back their progress to their friends in class. During library time this week, Aaron chose the books The Purim Chicken, by Margery Cuyler, Madeline, by Ludwig Bemelmans, and This Old Man. Thank you to Sally Triphon for reading to us! During PE with Coach Danny the children revisited the Bird's Nest Game they learned the previous week. They divided into three teams, with each team assigned to a hula-hoop. With the goal to strategically retrieve colored bean bags from the other teams’ hula-hoops, the children took turns working their locomotor (gross-motor) skills, running, hopping, skipping and gathering bean bags to try and win the game. Each turn, a papa rooster and mama hen stayed behind to take care of the ‘nest’, counting points at the end. Rabbi Josh told the story of King Ari and his wise assistants, Sarah Swan and Mr. Penguin. Sarah Swan was wise because she studied and read many books. Mr. Penguin’s wisdom came from life experience, where he took care of his parents, went fishing to provide for them each day, and showed generosity and kindness to everyone. King Ari chose both of them as his assistants because he appreciated and valued both of them and said they were the smartest in the kingdom. Rabbi Josh emphasized to the children the importance of studying and learning new things at school, and being kind and thoughtful friends. During Music with Ditza, the children played with wooden tone blocks and a makel hakasha (rhythm stick) to the beat of Hebrew songs. They also had fun time guessing which instrument sounds were being played during a musical game with Ditza. Reminders:
Thank you so much to all the fathers and grandfathers who joined us in our classroom and for Shabbat services this week! We hope you enjoyed your experience in community at the brunch and spending special time with your child. Shabbat Shalom! Shoshi and Meirav
