Dear Parents, We began the week as we do every beginning of the month with a beautiful school-wide Havdalah service led by Jen. It is a wonderful way to say Shalom to Shabbat and to welcome in the new school week. We said good bye to April, by counting the 30 days of the month and we welcomed in May, talking about how May had 31 days in it. In class we are learning the Hatikvah in honor of Israel’s Independence Day and the song “Dgalim BaRuach”- flags in the wind. On Tuesday, we went to a “shuk” (market) with the Pre-K classes on the small Pre-K yard. The yard was set up with many tables, each one “selling” a different item: one table had Israeli salad, another table had pita and hummus, and another had lemonade. Each child got shekel (Israeli currency) to “buy” the food that they wanted. We also had a “Kotel” and the children had the opportunity to write a note with a help of a teacher and place it between the cracks. We had Hannah, one of the teachers on staff, come and speak to the children about tallitot and the significance of why we wear them. She showed the children various tallitot and each one was different but they all had one similarity, the fringes to make them kosher. It was an interesting lesson and it was amazing to see all the various styles of tallitot that she showed us. We completed our Mother’s Day page in our journals. We talked about Mother’s Day and every child told us why their mother is special to them. In Music with Maestro we sang Am Yisrael Chai, David Melech Yisrael and Shir Mishpacha. The children had fun singing the song in opposite ways; it was their idea to “trick” Maestro. They were engaged when they sang Shema, closing their eyes to sing it, which was beautiful to watch. We had Michelle, an Occupational Therapist who works for the school, come and do a stretching and yoga lesson with the children, showing them how they can do various poses to relax and unwind their bodies. How relaxing! We had Music with Ditza where we paraded around the room with musical instruments; sang a song “In the Classroom” with both Hebrew and English words; a song about colors in Hebrew where each child held a colored flannel crayon (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, gray and black) and they had to put their crayon on the flannel board when their color was called. We played “Ma chaser?” (what’s missing?) a classroom favorite, where the children had to name all the various shapes and then guess which shape was missing from the floor. Thank you to Olivia Pitson and her family who helped us celebrate Shabbat. Reminders: Mothers and Grandmothers Week is the week of May 8-12. We invite you to join us on any of the dates below.
