Dear Ulpanon Bet Families, Welcome to our first full week at school! Last week we introduced the fall season and patterns. This week, we continued our exploration of both. The children noted that the fall season is part of a pattern that repeats each year. As the WLP Universal Theme for Pre-K is Beginnings, we focused on the repetition and order of patterns. During our discussions, the children said that each pattern begins the same way, starting me’ha’hatchala (from the beginning), until it ends, and we do it od pa’am veh od pa’am (again and again). We asked what patterns and routines the children have at home that begin with the same action each morning or night. One child shared that every night before they go to sleep they begin with dinner, then take a bath, brush their teeth, put on pajamas and read a book. We talked about patterns at school that have the same beginning each time, like our daily schedule, the days of the week and the months of the year on the calendar: “The days of the week and the seasons, zeh gam tavnit (that’s also a pattern); you can’t see it but it’s there.” We discovered another pattern during our EC Havdalah ceremony. When we separate from Shabbat each week with beautiful songs, blessings, spices and the twisted candle, we begin a sweet new week.
In class, the children created beautiful necklaces from white wooden beads and felt pieces. They chose their own tavnit (pattern) and took careful time and attention to put them together. The necklaces are hanging in our classroom and will be worn by the children at our EC Thanksgiving celebration. We took a fall nature walk around the campus and asked the children to share their observations. The children noticed leaves on the ground, stating:
We learned new vocabulary for Stav (Fall): shalechet (leaf fall), itztrubal (pine cone), kotzim (thorny/spiky burr), maklot (twigs), chilazon (snail), zachal (caterpillar), alim (leaves). The children had fun collecting different leaves, twigs, spiky balls and a few pine cones. After sorting the collected items, the children created fall pattern art from the leaves and twigs using echad, shtayim, shalosh (1, 2, 3) to explain the patterns. We learned a fun fall song in class called Ruach Stav (Fall Wind). Here is the link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b5w9y-Zbho. During the children’s work with patterns this week, one child asked about the Lite Brite pegs, “Is this another tavnit thing?” Coach Danny worked with the children on hand-eye coordination utilizing lined up cones and red and blue basketballs. The children stood in between cones to roll the ball and knock another ball off a cone. The object was to keep an eye on the ball and aim with two hands or one hand. The children picked up the ball and rotated each time the balls were knocked off the cones. Rabbi Josh visited us for S’Torah time and told us the story of the Tower of Babel, where the people tried to build a tower going up to the sky, ignoring the rules and not being kind to one another. God then made the people speak different languages, so they could not build together or understand each other. Rabbi Josh asked the children who looks out for them? They responded:
During Music with Ditza, the children sang songs with rhythm sticks and a giant rainbow band. One of the songs, Ani Menagen, I Play (an instrument) can be found at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxY70lDXaeM. They also sang the song about chamisha kofim (five monkeys) to the felt board story. Reminders:
Shabbat Shalom! B'vracha, Shoshi and Meirav
