Shabbat Shalom Ulpanon Bet Families, This week we introduced the story of Hanukkah, and how the Macabees won the war with the Greeks and found freedom to celebrate shabbat and say prayers. We retold the miracle of the jug of oil that lasted for eight days instead of one. The children are beginning to familiarize themselves with Hanukkah vocabulary: Ner- Candle, Shemen-oil, Nes- miracle, Beit Mikdash- The holy Temple, and more. Many interesting learning opportunities and discoveries await us with our Hanukkah unit; we look forward to sharing the children’s perspectives and thoughts in the coming weeks. The children are excited for our upcoming Pre-K Thanksgiving feast! The Ulpanon Bet friends will make corn bread to share with their Pre K friends. In class we read: “Hadlaat Ha’Anakit” The Huge Pumpkin, by Michael Abas, about a huge pumpkin that grew in the garden. We then made a yummy pumpkin cake in class. We opened up a big pumpkin and the children used a hand grater to grate pumpkin for the cake. They wanted to share about the special food they eat for Thanksgiving at their homes: Corn, turkey, fried chicken, cornbread, and mashed potatoes. During P.E. with Coach Danny, the children practiced their rolling, jumping, aiming, and running skills in a game of SCAT. They enjoyed taking turns, calling out “freeze”, jumping 10 big jumps, and then rolling the ball to target another friend, before passing the ball to the next child to start again. We also played: “Air, land, Sea”. Air- jump in place, land- jump backwards, and sea- jump forwards. We practiced our listening and following direction skills. Rabbi Josh visited us and shared a story about Jacob and Esau, the sons of Isaac and Rebecca. Jacob made a special soup, and when his brother Esau was very hungry, Jacob told him he can have the soup if Esau passes to him the blessing of the first born. Rabbi Josh then asked if Jacob did a nice thing by giving the soup. Some children said that it was a nice thing because Jacob made soup for his hungry brother, some children shared that it wasn’t a nice thing since Jacob asked for something back. Rabbi Josh taught us a song about Chesed kindness. The children are engaging and being mindful with their thoughts during S’torah time. They are also connecting to previous visits from Rabbi Josh, elaborating on and enriching our discussions. We had a blast during music with Ditza. We sang Ladod Moshe- the Hebrew version of “Old MacDonald”. Each child received an animal puppet to act out the song. We marched around the room and made music with paper plates. Thank you to Emmet and his family for helping us usher in Shabbat! Reminders: * There is no school on Wednesday 11/21-Friday 11/23.
