Shalom Ulpanon families,
Teachers started the week with a professional development day dedicated to instilling and practicing safety measures and procedures on our campus. These drills and follow-up are imperative to ensure that we are always current and prepared in the event a real-life emergency situation arises. Thank you to Sam’s mom, Lauren, for reading Wild Predators, by Martin Kratt and Chris Kratt to us, and for telling the Purim story with pictures from the book, Queen Esther Saves Her People, by Rita Golden Gelman. After learning about the Haman’s demand that Jews bow down to him, one of the children shared that when she attend the Frozen show on stage, the actors at the end bowed down to the audience. We then remembered that we bow down during Shabbat service with Ditza for the Barchu prayer. This started a discussion about how the Jewish people do not bow down to other people, only to the their one God, and that when people bow at the end of a performance, they are showing appreciation and thanking the audience for clapping. The children also thought about why Haman wanted the Jews to bow down to him, “Maybe he thought he was important like God?” The children continued to work on their special collaboration trees for Tu B’shvat that they began last week. After conferring in their groups, the children asked for additional materials. Each group - with each child taking a turn - presented their tree to the rest of the class, sharing their ideas and the process of the project: How the idea started, describing the art and materials, how they collaborated and how everything evolved.
We introduced Purim vocabulary words: masecha/masechot. matanot la’evyonim, keter, ozney haman, melech, malka,, mikrah Megillah, Megillat Esther, mishloach manot, laytzan, armon, tachposet/tachposot (mask/masks, gifts for the poor, crown, hamentaschen, king, queen, reading of the Megillah, Esther’s Megillah scroll, Purim basket, clown, castle, costume(s)). During music with Ditza, we sang Purim songs using groggers and fun movements. Thank you to Winston and family for helping us usher in Shabbat. Important Dates:
Shabbat Shalom and have a great weekend. Meirav and Shoshi
