Shalom Ulpanon Bet families, This week was all about Tu B’Shvat. The children painted either an orange or lemon tree with paint, and made a shkadiyah (almond tree), painting their hand as the tree, and gluing on cotton balls and crumbled pink tissue paper to make the blossoms. We played a game with the children of ma ch’aser? (What is missing?) where they had to tell us which fruit was missing from limon (lemon), tapuz (orange) clementina (clementine), eshkolit (grapefruit), pomela (pomelo). The children also had to sort the various fruits in the correct bucket and tell us what the name of the fruits they were sorting. The children all had the opportunity to make lemonade by juicing lemons, adding water and sugar to it to make it sweeter. They also used a tong to pick up a lemon slice to put in their cup working on their fine motor skills. The children also made orange juice, juicing the oranges as they had juiced the lemons. We also made cake using the oranges. Later in the week, we put out the citrus fruit, doing a taste test for the various fruits (tangerine, orange, lemon, grapefruit and pomelo) We had a great discussion about differences and similarities between the citrus fruit. Here were some of the things they said: all the citrus fruits are round one of the children had shared that the lemon is oval, they all have skin that we can’t eat. The children also came up with similarities between this family that: that orange and tangerine are both same color orange and are also sweet, and lemon is sour. They mentioned the order by size: Pomelo, grapefruit, orange, lemon, and tangerine. This was a great opportunity for the children to explore taste, smell, size, shape. We really enjoyed this discussion and are proud of the children thoughts. We had Coach Danny in our classroom where we played a game of Follow the Leader where one child did a movement, all the children had to follow their lead and another child had to guess who the leader was. Each child took a turn being the leader and guessing who the leader was. We had Music with Maestro where we sang various songs and did some body movements as well. Thank you to Jenna and Jessica who came in to make yogurt parfaits with the children. It was a delicious snack and the children enjoyed layering all the various ingredients (chocolate chips, rainbow sprinkles, bananas, strawberries, blueberries and granola) to make a tasty treat. If you would like to come and volunteer one day, we would be more than happy to have you do so. We used water color to decorate kippot that the children will wear to Havdalah and to Shabbat. Todah to Liron, Olivia M.’s mom who was our Library reader, who read us two books on Tu B’Shvat, The Littlest Tree by Sylvia A. Rouss and The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. Olivia M. was our Shabbat Ima. Reminders: Picture Day is on Tuesday, January 31st at 9 am SHARP. Please bring your child dressed and ready BY 8:50 AM to the classroom. Or bring them directly to the temple at 9 am. Fathers and Grandfathers Week is February 6th-10th. If anyone’s Father or Grandfather would like to come speak to the class about what they do, we would welcome it. Shabbat Shalom, Talia, Meirav and Gali
