Throughout the year the children have shown tremendous interest in books. They enjoy picture reading by themselves or with friends and love having books read to them. Many times it’s the same books over and over again. Our trips to the library have also been something the children look forward to. Having a book to hold in your hands is a great feeling. Although it does involve learning skills, literacy is so much more than this. It is about learning to use reading and writing in real and important ways. When we help children become readers and writers, we give them the key to a worldwide community. This does not happen overnight and we need to help spark their literacy, and then keep it going by inspiring and encouraging them. A lifelong literacy journey can begin with small but exciting steps as your children experience the thrill of getting lost in a story, or the power of expressing their own ideas in writing. This allows children to explore and communicate what they think, feel and know and learn to use language in new and different ways.
In class for the past two weeks, we have been working on literacy and storytelling. We are learning how to spell our names and noticing simple words around our school community, like “STOP” or “EXIT”. We are also learning how to tell and write a story. In every story there is a beginning, middle and an end, complete with pictures to show readers what is happening in the story. The children had an opportunity to create a beginning to their story in their own storybook. They each painted a beautiful book cover, book mark and first page of their story. Please help them to continue to work on their story and hopefully in the end they will have an amazing story to share. Also this week we celebrated Lag B’Omer both indoors and out. In our classroom the children got to pretend to be camping out in the mountains. We had a tent with became a cave, picnic area and a campfire complete with marshmallows on sticks for roasting. During our campfire the children heard a story about Rabbi Akiva. Then the children had their chance to share their own campfire stories. Afterwards we had a picnic outside with room 22 and 24. A good time was had by all.
