It was a week of Mitzvot in room 23. In preparation for Generations day and our Mitzvah project, the children have been learning about Mitzvot. During one of our group times we asked the children if they knew what a Mitzvah was:
Teacher - Does anyone know what a Mitzvah is? Lana - A cookie with chocolate mixed on top. Leah – You can give it to your mommy. Teacher – That’s right Leah. A Mitzvah can be giving something to your mommy. Tilly – Giving something to a friend is a Mitzvah. Teacher – Nice Tilly. So many good ideas, lets read a story and see if we can find all the Mitzvot in the story. We then sat down to read You Can Do A Mitzvah by Katherine Kahn. It began with describing what it is, “A Mitzvah is something we do to help someone else.” It continues to show pictures of children helping others. Like reading to a friend, feeding a baby, carrying boxes for a neighbor and recycling trash. After the story the question was asked again. Teacher – Who can tell me about a Mitzvah they have done before? Bunny – I shared my toys with my friend. Maija – I helped friends collect pine-cones. Stella – Sharing something with my brother. Jonah – Cleaning up. Ryan – Reading a book with Emmy. Leah – Helping my mommy keep my house clean. Shylee – I cleaned up my room for a play-date. Afterwards the teachers shared with the children that on Friday they will have a special Shabbat with special visitors from their own families. We gave them a simple run down of what was happening that day and they became very excited to share their classroom and love of their Jewish community. Throughout the rest of the week, we read other stories that illustrated the meaning of Mitzvot. We read “Joey and the Giant Box,” by Deborah Lakritz and “Maddi’s Fridge,” by Lois Brandt. Both stories are about Sova, bringing food to those who don’t have any. For Joey, it was giving to those you may not know, and Maddi shared food with a friend and their family. The children seemed to understand how important it is to have things, especially food. Jaden – I give Coke at my house to my friends. Jonah – I brought Sova to class. Ryan – I bringed it too. Bunny – I share my food with my friends. Edy – I share food with Robbie. Leo – Me too, with Gia. Friday was a great day and the children had an amazing time with their special guest. They were busy making challah, celebrating shabbat both in the classroom and at temple and exploring the classroom activities. Make sure to look at all the pictures that captured this special day.
