This week at school the children were as busy as bees. In preparation for our upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashanah, we continued to learn about apples. Throughout the week in small groups, the children used their sense of taste as they taste-tested different types of apples--red, yellow and green, both with and without honey. It was so nice to hear the conversations the children were having about how the apples felt and tasted. Here are some of the things they had to say. Leah, "Mine is crunchy and it's good". Edy, "So crunchy and spicy". Jonah, "It's so good and crunchy". Bunny, "Mines is red and good and sweet and sour and juicy". Shylee, " My apple is so sour and spicy".
As the children have conversations with each other they build on their existing vocabulary. Words we heard were juicy, crunchy, mushy, sweet, sour and even spicy. Those who chose to taste apples with honey had even more to say about the apples. After our apple tasting we made a chart to show which apples our friends in class like the most. Our clear winner was red. During our large group circle time the children had an opportunity to sort all the different colors of apples that they brought to school. Sorting teaches children to notice details and helps children form categories such as color, size and shape. It also helps children build a number sense and an understanding of concepts of more and less. We also had a chance to talk more about where honey comes from. We used the honeycomb that Bunny brought to school to talk about its shape and how the honey gets inside. The children were excited to see and touch the honeycomb. They also got a closer look at it with magnifiers or recreated it with yellow hexagon blocks in our science center. We ended our week with a lovely all school High Holiday Shabbat service with Ditzah Rabbi Josh and Rabbi Sari, where we sang and heard the Shofar blow. We want to thank everyone for an amazing start to our year and wish you all Shana Tova, a happy and healthy new year.
