We took our first trip to the school library this week with Bunny’s mom, Melissa, as our first library reader. The children had an opportunity to walk to our school library, listen to stories being read and look at books themselves. Before we leave each visit the children and teachers choose books to check out and use in our classroom learning. We checked out a book about Sukkot, and when we returned to class, we read the story and began to talk about Sukkot and why we build a Sukkah and what we will need to build it. We will continue this study next week. Our next visit is October 28th and Lana’s mom is coming to read to us. Don’t forget to sign up to join us on our library visits!
After we returned from Yom Kippur the children used our leftover bananas to make chocolate chip banana bread. This was our way of symbolizing breaking the fast with the children. While cooking, children develop their social-emotional skills. The act of following a recipe can encourage self-direction and independence, while also teaching children to follow directions and use thinking skills to problem solve. Physically they are chopping, squeezing, spreading, and mixing are all cooking skills that help develop a child’s small muscle control and eye-hand coordination Additionally, cooking offers authentic opportunities for students to understand and apply their knowledge of measuring, one-to-one correspondence, numbers, and counting. As they follow a recipe, children organize ingredients, follow a sequence, and carry out multiple directions. They are also expanding and enhancing their vocabulary to language development. On Thursday, we celebrated Bunny’s 3rd birthday. We celebrated her with a special birthday circle time, where the children made her a pretend birthday cake with blueberries, chocolate, sprinkles and of course love. Bunny then shared a special treat of pumpkin cake-pops with everyone. As always it was a special day.
