This week was all about Thanksgiving. During circle time the children heard the story of the Mayflower and how the pilgrims arrived here in America. We also talked about what it means to be thankful. It all started with a book called Giving Thanks by Jonathan London and the book Feeling Thankful by Shelly Rotner. It gave the children many ideas of what to be thankful for. Some said mommy and daddy while others said my baby or even ice cream. This conversation gave the children a chance to learn and use new vocabulary. This also allowed them to strengthen their self-esteem and feel comfortable speaking and sharing ideas in front of a group. On Thursday, all of the Hoffman building, First Steps and Discoverers, had a Thanksgiving experience. This was a way to allow the children to work in other classrooms and with other children to make food traditionally served on thanksgiving. First the children were in our room to make cranberry saucer from scratch. They tasted the berries raw, which were sour and crunchy. After we cooked them with sugar and orange juice, we tasted them again and they were sweet and soft. Next, the children went to make mashed potatoes in room 25, where they mushed the potatoes with mashers and added milk, butter and salt for the final dish. Then the children moved to room 21 to make corn muffins. Here they poured and mixed all the ingredients to make muffins to have with lunch. Finally, they went to room 22 where they shucked and cleaned the corn to prepare it for our Friendship Feast next Tuesday. For many of the children it was their first experience and exploration of Thanksgiving and foods that we eat on this American holiday.
