Dear Parents,
This week has been an exciting one, having seen a lot of progress with each student! This week there was a heavy focus on shapes and matching. The students not only did individual matching games during morning centers, but we also played matching games as a class with the students pairing up. They all grasped the concept very well so we are looking forward to building on those skills. With Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaching, we also focused this week on what it means to be different and the same. The students created portraits of themselves with dolls made of various skin and hair colors. They got an opportunity to look into a mirror and discuss with the class what they felt was the same as other friends and what was different. This ties in to our theme this year, the other is me. It is important at this age to instill these values and the understanding that we are all the same; therefore we will be continuing this theme throughout the remainder of the year. We also put out multicultural people with many options of clothes for them to dress the dolls and use many different people, colors and professions, to put in the school buses as a floor toy this week! Lastly, we have been focusing on two specific self-help skills this week: putting on shoes and serving food. The students have made some major progress in these areas, and feel free to encourage the same actions at home. You can give them an extra 5 minutes or so before leaving the house and they can try putting their socks and shoes on themselves. Also, they have not only been serving themselves but also passing food to others at the table when they are asked. This is another thing that can be reinforced at home if you wish. Reminder: Next week there is no school on Monday the 18th and Tuesday the 19th. School will resume on Wednesday January 20th. We will be starting tricycle express next week so please bring helmets if you wish for your child to participate! We are not allowed to have toys on the tricycle yard so those who do not have a helmet will have to sit and watch friends. Because we want everybody to participate, we hope that everybody can bring a helmet. Thank you to Makize for organizing the sign up lists for snack and being the first to bring in some healthy treats! The students really loved it. Library began this week so be sure to take a second look at when you have signed up for library. Best Wishes, Tatiana and Lashelle
