Even though we had a short week, we had quite a productive week in Room 12. In honor of Martin Luther King Junior’s birthday, Room 12 has been discussing what peace means to us. We learned that the sign that represents peace is called a peace sign. The children were able to make their own peace signs out of small plastic plates and glass paint. They squirted the colors that they liked onto the plate and rolled a marble around in the plate. The children integrated their fine motor skills into this project by cutting tape to place as straight lines onto the peace sign. They learned that the peace sign is made up of a circle and triangles. Beginning last week and continuing this week, we introduced a new word to the children, “details”. We began this discussion late last week by comparing a lemon and a banana. We showed both objects to the children and asked them to use their senses (smell, touch, taste, and sight) to describe these objects. Kayden observed that these objects are both the same color, and he said they are both yellow. Paisley said that you can find both in the same section at the market, the fruit section. Carter told the class that the banana looks like a moon and that it is longer than the lemon. The children noticed that the banana was squishy, soft, cold and hard, and the lemon was harder and bumpy. We explained that all of these words are called “details”, and they are used to describe or explain what an object looks like or feels like or smells like. Learning the concept of details not only enhances the children’s vocabulary, but it also allows them to think critically and pay close attention to details. They are beginning to learn that using colors and shapes helps to describe an object, and we will continue to work with the children to learn more describing words to be able to describe every piece of an object. We incorporated our topic of similarities and differences into the conversation by comparing the inside of the two fruits. The children used more descriptive words to explain similarities and differences. Wynter noticed that there were seeds inside the lemon, and Elliot observed that the banana has more seeds than the lemon. Noah said that the seeds are smaller in the banana than they are in the lemon. Each week we will continue to use this new vocabulary and reinforce the use of descriptive words when explaining any topic throughout the day. This week we also played our category game by breaking up our friends into categories by colors of clothing. The categories were broken up by yellow, black/gray, red/pink, and blue. The yellow category had the least amount of children, and the red/pink and black/gray category had a tie for the most. We are trying to introduce a mathematical vocabulary into our classroom activities such as least/most or greater/less. When you are out and about or at home, try using this vocabulary with your children to start building a mathematical foundation. We want to thank the Bahari’s for celebrating Shabbat with our class.
