Despite all of the rain, Room 12 had a very busy week exploring and expanding our minds. We started out the week discussing peace, in observance of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. We began our discussion by reading, "The Peace Book," and then by talking about what “peace” actually means. Our friends came up with great ideas. Skyler said that peace means shaking hands, and Michael said that peace is quiet when everyone goes to bed at night. Kayden said that peace is giving someone a book, while Carter said that peace is not fighting. Try to ask your child what peace means to them and ask them where they can find peace at home. We will continue to talk about peace and link peace to friendship and respect. Through this discussion, the children are expanding their vocabulary and learning the true meaning of new words.
The children had the opportunity to make their own infused olive oil jars this week. The children learned about three new herbs including sage, rosemary and thyme. The children smelled each herb and were able to trim the herb off of the plant to put it into their oil jars. They also expanded their sense of smell by smelling garlic and chili peppers and reflecting on what they liked. The children did a fabulous job creating each oil jar filled with all different flavors. We can’t wait for you to try them with your children and identify all the different herbs and spices. Room 12 continued to talk about categorizing and comparing and contrasting throughout the week. On Monday, we brought a bag of various items to the rug during circle time. The children categorized the items into different groups including fruit, sea animals, Legos, art, and transportation (i.e. cars, trains and boats). The children were enthusiastic about sorting these items into the various categories. It was like a mystery bag and they did not know which item would come out next. They are beginning to grasp the idea that different items fall into different categories. We continued this discussion into our Share Day by breaking up the cereals children brought to school into different categories. There were five categories including Cheerios, Flakes, Fruit Loops, chocolate cereal and other. To take this discussion one step further, we asked the kids to identify some similarities (things that are the same) and some differences (things that they see that are different) between two different cereals. For example, we held up a bag of Cheerios and a bag of Fruit Loops. Kayden identified that the cereals were the same shape and that they were both circles. Michael pointed out that the cereals were different colors. This conversation helps to promote critical thinking at an early age. Categorizing and comparing and contrasting introduces a new comparative language and helps the children to develop the skills to become detail-oriented. Discussing colors, shapes, size, texture and more of various items introduces the concept of research, which is a skill they will use throughout the rest of their lives. We want to thank the Neman’s for celebrating Shabbat with our class. Please check out our Room 12’s Google Drive for weekly pictures of all of our activities and fun!!
