It has been a lovely week in Room 12 as we begin to wrap up the year. The children have enjoyed practicing their skills to put together puzzles. They have mastered completing table top puzzles and are determined to master 100 piece floor puzzles. We are so proud of all that they have accomplished, and we are so impressed by their newly-found puzzling skills. Completing puzzles enhances physical, cognitive, and emotional skills. The children develop their gross and fine motor skills (depending on the size of the puzzle pieces) by learning to turn the pieces to fit them into their correct spot. Their cognitive skills are also being developed as they are learning to problem-solve. Puzzles also help instill early mathematical skills in the children in that they learn various sizes and shapes within each piece, as well as the size and shape of a puzzle when it is complete. Lastly, puzzles help enhance emotional skills because the children learn patience and are rewarded with a sense of accomplishment when they are able to complete the puzzle. For instance, Skyler can confidently complete a flower table top puzzle and asks to complete it every day. We saw Paisley’s eyes light up when she completed the 42 piece castle floor puzzle independently. We also began our discussion on Shavuot, which is the holiday that commemorates the giving of the 10 Commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai. This holiday gives us an opportunity to discuss how we treat others. We read No Rules for Michael to open up our conversation about Shavuot and rules and expectations. This book emphasizes the importance of rules, kindness and compassion. We asked the children, “What are some of the expectations in our classroom?” Owen said, “We should share with our friends.” Elliot said, “We should be nice to each other in our class.” Kayden stated, “We should always say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.” Come in and visit Room 12 and read our very own set of Classroom Commandments. We will continue to discuss more values of Shavuot next week and incorporate a dairy themed cooking project into our learning. We finished up our week with a wonderful Shabbat celebration with Noah’s family. Thank you for joining us in our classroom and Shabbat services to celebrate this week. We enjoyed singing Shabbat songs, eating fruit and challah, and praying in Temple!
