Newsletter Nov 2nd-6th
Dear Parents, We are very excited to be moving into the month of November and finally seeing some true changes in weather! Because of these obvious changes, we have been focusing on identifying the weather daily and also determining whether we need a jacket or not. Some of the weather vocabulary that we have been using is sunny, cloudy, rainy and windy. Feel free to use these key words when talking to your children in the car as they look out of the window! They love to be observant of their surroundings. One of the more fun toys that were put out for most of the days this week was various sized Tupperware! In order to make this extra fun, we placed smaller toys inside the containers, and even stuffed some scarves in the small ones, so that when the students open it there is a surprise for them! They love the mystery and have been getting better at identifying where the tab is and how to use your thumb underneath the tab to pop it open. This is another activity that can be done at home and is fantastic practice for a crucial self-help skill: opening your own lunch! Since the children almost daily see us teachers tell felt stories on the board, this week the students were given an extra-large felt board with so many animals and colors! When they saw that there was a barn to go with the animals, the students recalled the Old McDonald Had a Farm song and began singing on their own. This really showed us that they are using critical thinking during this play time because they are connecting the current toy/activity to previously learned material. As you can see in one of the videos in the slideshow attached to this newsletter, the students have really been practicing their ABC’s! We really love hearing them sing these songs on their own, and this one in particular will resonate very well once they begin focusing on the individual letters. The fact that they are choosing to sing this song of all of the songs that we have learned makes us very happy that they enjoy this one. J We have been focusing more on identifying shapes, which you can see in the pictures above when the students were using popsicle sticks to unveil colors on black paper in the shapes of squares and triangles. Using art projects to learn this material through play has really sparked their interest and we could not get most of them out of that table! Throughout this week we have been strengthening the children’s’ gross (large) motor skills through outdoor play. Our class has a wonderful, very large and colorful hopscotch mat where the students jump while moving forward and even trying to move backwards! We have seen a lot of growth in their gross motor skills even so early on in the year, which was evident when we took out a specific, really cool toy (displayed in pictures in the slideshow.) It is a half of a ball (the yellow one) with a hole on the side and students stuff a soft ball inside the hole, jump on the large yellow ball and the small ball pops out! This required a lot of strength to push the large yellow ball down hard enough to project the smaller balls. Everyone had a blast trying this out and really strengthening their core and leg muscles by jumping so hard! Arianna was Shabbat girl this week! In honor of her birthday next Wednesday the 11th, we were lucky to have some extra treats with our hallah this week. It was lovely having her whole family with us to celebrate and we love seeing how much she loved it with smiles and laughter, which was contagious to all of her friends! Reminder: Square 1 Art orders are due by this upcoming Monday, November 9th. You can order online at square1art.com/shop or fill out the order form, making the check payable to Square 1 Art and returning it to us in the classroom. Everything will arrive just in time for Hanukkah and up to 38% of proceeds will benefit our friend Nika at Beit Issie Shapiro. Have a wonderful weekend with this beautiful weather! We look forward to seeing everybody next week. Shabbat Shalom, Tatiana and Lashelle
