Room 12 had a very busy week talking about and preparing for Hanukkah. The children worked on making their own dreidels and hanukkiyahs. Each child made a dreidel out of a small wooden top. They pressed all different colored Plastilina clay into the wood to make beautiful dreidels. This activity emphasizes a symbol of the holiday of Hanukkah and doubled as an activity to strengthen the children’s fine motor grip. Pressing the small pieces of clay into the wood and spreading it around helps the children strengthen their muscles in their fingers, which will eventually lead to holding a writing utensil with the proper grip. We also made hanukkiyahs this week in Room 12. Some children chose to make their hanukkiyahs out of wood, while others chose small slats of tile. They decorated the hanukkiyahs with a variety of materials including paint, stickers, jewels, colorful rocks, and more. We can’t wait for you to see the creativity the children put into these projects. The children are so excited to take their hannukiyahs home and light the candles in their very own creations this Hanukkah. We have also continued to practice the Hanukkah songs and we love seeing how enthusiastic the children get each time we sing.
We want to give a big thanks to Shideh and Desiree for joining us in the library this week. The children also love sitting with their mommies in the library in the special rocking chair and especially love listening to you read stories. Room 12 has also been busy practicing our letter recognition and number recognition. Each day the children partake in various activities to practice these skills. This week we introduced a new letter recognition activity, where the children are able to sort letters A-H (our first eight letters that we have learned from Zoophonics. The children have to find all of the A’s and place them in the “A” container and so and on and so forth for the remaining letters. We are focusing on the children becoming proficient in recognizing each letter in the alphabet. Please continue pointing out these first 8 letters in the alphabet everywhere you go so that your child is always being exposed to the alphabet. Room 12 had a great Shabbat with Kora’s family. We want to thank the Cohen’s for coming in and sharing our Shabbat with Room 12. We hope everyone has a great weekend, and we look forward to more Hanukkah activities next week, our last week before Winter Break! We cannot believe how quickly our year is flying by, and we are very excited to celebrate Hanukkah with all of our amazing children and parents at our class party on Thursday December 15th.
