Room 12 had a productive week back at school after Thanksgiving break! We have been focusing on name and letter recognition this week. Through various activities each morning, circle time and after nap time, the children are learning the letters in their name and the first 7 letters of the alphabet. We have seen great progress each morning when the children identify their name and Velcro it to the board with their picture on it. We also ask the children what their names start with before washing our hands before snack. For instance, “Who’s name starts with an “N?” Noah and Neda will stand up and say, “My name starts with an N.” This is just another activity to expose the children to letters throughout the school day. We practice our Zoo-phonics every day for 5-10 minutes after nap time. The children are showing great progress in recognizing the letters and being able to put them in order from start to finish. We added a new letter this week, G for Gordo Gorilla. If you see letters A-G at home or when you are out and about, ask your child to point them out! Room 12 also introduced Hanukkah! We started discussing the Hanukkiyah and the dreidel. Ask your child how many nights we celebrate Hanukkah for. They learned that the Hanukkiyah has 9 places for candles. Carter was very intrigued by the candles, asking, “Are all candles the same color?” Paisley quickly answered by stating, “No! Candles come in all different shapes and sizes!” We are excited to start making our very own Hannukiyahs next week. We also showed the children a dreidel. Noah asked, “What do you do with a dreidel?” We talked about how there are 4 different symbols on the dreidel and that it spins. We set out all different dreidels on Thursday. The children saw that dreidels come in different shapes and sizes and many asked if they could spin the same way as the other dreidels. We will continue to talk more about the game, explore different dreidels and even play next week. We might even create our own dreidels to take home to play over Winter Break. The kids also enjoyed learning our new Hanukkah songs, which we will continue to practice to perform at our Hanukkah celebration. Room 12 had a great Shabbat with Michael’s family, the Massoudi’s. Thank you for coming in and sharing our Shabbat with Room 12. We hope everyone has a great weekend, and we look forward to all of the activities in store next week!
