Our exciting week started with My Gym. We had a lot of fun jumping and crawling through the tunnels. There was plenty of giggles to go around as we pretended that our friends disappeared into the tunnels and couldn't find them. No matter how old they maybe, hide and seek is always good fun.
The children are also busy practicing their fine motor skills by tracing letters, shapes and gluing our family trees. The trees are growing flowers now as we are putting family pictures on the branches. Both teachers have been asking the children who is who in the pictures you have sent us and what side of the tree they should go on. It is helping us to continuing learning about your families and it is teaching the children how our families build through the years. On Tuesday Anja brought the book, "The Day the Crayons Quit". It is his favorite book and sharing it with us was so nice. After the story we started a conversation about what color crayon you would be if you could be a crayon for a day and why that color. We had lots of answers and most of the children picked their favorite color, (which seems to change all the time). However, on answer that stuck out was, "I would be a Rainbow crayon because it has all the colors and I like to use every color to color with". Of course, how could we not take that idea one step ahead and use it when talking about Shavuot. Colors working together, showing kindness, respect, love and team work fit into what are some of the 10 commandments in our class. We did have a little trouble understanding positive commandment versus negative commandments, but we will continue to work on that. Learning our letter sounds has been fun for all the children. They have even begun to master this on their own. Several weeks ago, we introduced a letter sound game, like Zingo, and the children were not very interested in playing it without teacher supervision. This week they took it upon themselves to play together find the letter that matched the picture on the cards. With all that going on we still had time to learn about mixing colors using the 3 primary colors paints with our Spin Art machine. Each art piece came out unique just like your children. We will be framing them soon. Both teachers are trying to decide if this will be the cover of the photo albums we will send home at the end of the school year. Shavuot is celebration often includes the eating of a dairy meal and we decided that blintzes were not for our class. We have lots and lots of sweet tooth's and well as big fans of chocolate. Since Teacher Fern took a tour of a Chocolate plantation and learned the history of how chocolate was used and processed, the children have also begun to learn about this. We looked at pictures of the cocoa flower, seeds, drying process and roasting. We even held the unroasted seeds. No one could imagine how this would be made into chocolate. We tried to make our own chocolate. Not so easy without a grinder to help crush the beans. We did however enjoy making Graham Cracker Crust Chocolate Pudding Pie with Fresh Whip Cream. Now that is a good dairy dessert, Yummy! Thursday, we roasted our own cocoa beans and tasted the bitter chocolate taste. The children didn't really like them, (only a few were brave enough to try). We used the blender to crunch up the beans with sugar, cinnamon and vanilla to make chocolate milk. We did add a little cocoa powder to make it a little more chocolate taste. We meet with Rabbi Josh in Room 14 this week. Before Rabbi Josh came we unrolled the Torah and talked about the story of the Jewish people. We also learned about how the first book of the Torah begins with the letter Bet, and it sounds as if G-d breath started the story of creation. Our day on Friday, began as all Fridays begin with the sweet smell of challah in the air. We also celebrated Shavuot at school. The children and teachers came in wearing white and we wore flower crowns to Temple. Chloe was our Shabbat girl this week. It is always a treat to invite our families into our home to celebrate.
