Purim’s here, Purim’s here it’s a holiday so dear! Yes it’s that time of year again where the children are dancing, singing, and dressing up as all sorts of characters. This week we began our study of the holiday, Purim. The children had the opportunity to hear the Purim story at circle time as well as retell it to each other throughout the day using the flannel board and other props. We really enjoy listening to the language skills that kids need to use as they are storytelling. They are speaking, listening, developing their vocabulary, and calling upon beginning reading skills that we have been learning in class. If they are retelling a familiar story, they are using their listening and memorization skills. Creating their own story involves thinking about cause and effect, problem solving, exploring relationships, manners, and cooperation.
The children also enjoyed dressing up as their favorite Purim characters. As they dress up and pretend they are still learning. Children have vast, open imaginations. They aren’t constrained by what they know about the world; their minds can go anywhere. By pretending to be other people, children experiment with new ideas and behaviors. They can decide what they like and what they don’t. They can explore the elements of a new identify and take back to themselves whatever they like. This is one reason why Purim is so fun and fascinating to the children. Shabbat Shalom, Courtney and Cindy REMINDERS No school February 19th and 20th Purim Carnival February 25th
