This week we continued with recycling and spent a lot of time planting and working in our garden. These fundamentals of scooping up the dirt, placing the seeds in the pots and pouring the water all take fine motor control and strength. As kids garden, they develop important motor skills that will help them improve their academic skills such as writing, cutting and typing. These concepts promote hands-on experiences. Gardening is a wonderful introduction into the world of science especially botany, biology and chemistry. When kids plant their first seeds they become curious about what will happen next. They make their own hypothesis and monitor the progress each day. Without even realizing it, kids are learning the basic steps of the scientific process. Gardening is also a great way to teach kids about responsibility. Kids learn that they have to take care of their seeds each day in order for them to become healthy plants. Kids have to learn to be patient when waiting for their flowers and vegetables to grow. The waiting actually makes the moment the flower or vegetable sprouts even more exciting!
We also had fun learning about solids and liquids as we created different types of slime, dough and water related activities. Children love to experiment independently. Which is why hands-on science activities are essential for children to develop their individual needs. When children engage freely in science activities, adults have the opportunity to observe children exploring and seeing what they have learned. We explored slime, cloud dough, play dough, clay and water. So much fun!!! This week we had an amazing father’s/grandfather’s Shabbat. It was so special to see the dads and grandfathers spending this quality time with their children. *REMINDERS* During this past few weeks we had a lot of sickness in the classroom, children as well as teachers and parents. Please remember if your child has any symptoms of illness please keep them home. We are trying very hard to keep everyone healthy. If you feel your child’s symptoms are from allergies we will need a note from their doctor.
