This week the children began to learn about the holiday of Sukkot. All throughout the classroom centers, the children had many opportunities to create a Sukkah out of blocks, scarves, play-dough, wood, and branches. During circle time we discussed the structure of a Sukkah and introduced some of our favorite Sukkot tunes. To further our learning about how to build a Sukkah, we decided to take the children to see the Sukkot that the 3rd grade students created. They discovered that a Sukkah can be very different, yet provide the same experiences. On our way to the 3rd grade Sukkah exhibit, we took a Sukkah walk around campus to count how many Sukkot we have. We found four, and each was a little bit different from the next. The children really enjoyed looking, feeling and smelling the wood, branches and decorations. When we arrived back to class the children help to create a small classroom Sukkah with which to play.
On Tuesday we had a special visit from Cantor Emma and our friends in room 22 in the Sukkah. During our time together, Cantor Emma shook the Lulav and Etrog and explained the meaning of each part and how it is also like us. The palm branch is like the spine, the myrtle branch is like the eyes and the willow leaves are like the mouth. The children also had a chance to shake the Lulav and Etrog themselves as we said the blessing for Sukkot, the children also sang songs and danced. Please come to the classroom to look at the amazing Sukkot creations that were made by the children as well as some cute pictures. Finally we all had an amazing time at our first farmers market. They looked at all the nice things and yummy food. In the end they all ate a delicious and healthy fruit salad. REMINDERS NO SCHOOL Monday Oct 21st SHABBAT SHALOM, Courtney, Ren and Debbie
