This week on Monday we celebrated Kaia’s 3rd birthday. We celebrated her with a special birthday circle time, where the children made her a pretend birthday cake with blueberries, chocolate, sprinkles and of course love. Kaia then shared a special treat of pumpkin cupcakes with everyone. As always it was a special day.
Our first trip to the school library was this week. The children had an opportunity to walk to our school library, listen to stories being read and look at books themselves. Before we leave each visit the children and teachers choose books to check out and use in our classroom learning. Our next visit is November 5th and Kaia’s mom is coming to read to us. Don’t forget to sign up to join us on our library visits. On Wednesday the children used our left over bananas to make chocolate chip banana bread. While cooking children develop their social-emotional skills. The act of following a recipe can encourage self-direction and independence, while also teaching children to follow directions and use thinking skills to problem solve. Physically they are chopping, squeezing, spreading, and mixing are all cooking skills that help develop a child’s small muscle control and eye-hand coordination Additionally, cooking offers authentic opportunities for students to understand and apply their knowledge of measuring, one-to-one correspondence, numbers, and counting. As they follow a recipe, children organize ingredients, follow a sequence, and carry out multiple directions. They are also expanding and enhancing their vocabulary to language development. This week we also began talking about the season of Fall. During circle time we discussed how seasons change, and compared it to other things that change like going to a new class, changing clothes when they are wet or changing families when a new sibling is added. Then we looked at a few nature items that teacher Courtney brought in from her house. There was a basket of pine cones, seed pods and different color leaves. During our work times this week we looked at the fall colors outside, painted with the colors we saw and even had an experience with scarves and leaves in music with Andrew. More to come in the weeks ahead! Shabbat Shalom, Courtney and Cindy REMINDERS * Parent/Teacher conferences Oct 31st and Nov 1st * NO SCHOOL November 21st-23rd for Thanksgiving
