It’s been a short and fun week at school! We introduced the holiday of Purim to our friends in Room 24.
The children love the story because there is a king, a queen, and an evil guy who wears a hat in the shape of a triangle. We made crowns, dressed up as kings and queens, and ate hamentaschen! Here is an abbreviated, age appropriate version, as told by Teacher Sue, with the help of puppets: “A very, very long time ago there was a King named Achashverosh and a Queen named Esther. The King and Queen lived in a Castle in a place called Shushan. There was another man named Haman and he was not a very nice man – he was not kind to Queen Esther, who was Jewish and he was also not kind to the other Jewish people living in Shushan. When we read the story and we say Haman’s name, we say boo, make a lot of noise with noisemakers/gragers because Haman was mean to the Jewish people. Another man named Mordechai, who was Queen Esther’s Uncle, was a very smart and kind man. Uncle Mordechai and Queen Esther went to see the King told him that Haman was being mean to the Jewish people. The King did not like this and he made Haman leave the Castle, and he made sure that Haman was not mean to the Jewish people ever again.“ We will continue talking about Purim in the weeks to come. We will be making noisemakers, masks, hamentaschen and also singing Purim songs. As always, we ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat in our class and at Temple! Thank you to Charlotte and Jacki for the delicious snacks this week. The kids really love the variety of snacks each week. We hope you have a fabulous weekend and Shabbat Shalom! Sue and Judy
