This week we worked with kinetic sand and explored how we can work differently with it versus with regular sand. Kinetic sand is finer than regular sand and is made with oil, so it holds its shape when you mold it. It is soft and feels great to play with.
Some friends incorporated their fascination with dinosaurs into their play with the sand, and others created brand new ideas which lead to some amazing conversations. Nikolai and Blake continued learning about dinosaur's bodies, with Nikolai counting their teeth (dinosaurs have 3 teeth, and teacher Julia has 6 teeth) and Blake pointed out that dinosaurs have bones like we do. Shane observed how some dinosaurs have spikes while others don't. Charlotte rolled balls for the dinosaurs to play with. Vivi rolled the sand to make a floor, and then turned it into a swimming pool. She used the stamp to make swirls, and stirred the sand like she was making soup. Liam wanted to make an airplane, but noticed that it fell apart when he tried to mold it. Vivi helped Liam make an airplane, and made polk-a-dots to act as the seats. Henry made a rainbow pizza and covered it with eyes so the rainbow could see. He also made a sun with two eyes and a mouth, so that it could talk. We also celebrated Lag B'Omer this week. We had a picnic outside with the other classrooms and learned about Rabbi Akiva. In Roman times, the Jews were not allowed to study the Torah, so Rabbi Akiva gathered his students under the guise of having a picnic so that they could study together. Fire is a symbol often associated with Lag B'Omer, and on our carpet we talked about how to build a fire using pieces of wood and red, orange, and yellow felt. We talked about who had a fireplace at home, and wondered how we could build a pretend one here. We also talked about how a fire in the classroom could be dangerous, and that we only light a match on Shabbat for the candles. Blake remembered that he had jumped over the fire when his family celebrated Nowruz. Reminders: No school May 27 in honor of Memorial day. Tot Shabbat is Saturday June 1 at 10 am. RSVP is required. Last day of school is Wednesday June 5.
