This week we continued to use scissors in class. We have moved on from cutting play-dough to cutting tape and paper. Here, we saw a lot of cooperative play. Our friends have been creating beautiful art by cutting tape and placing on paper. Liam, Vivi, Charlotte, Blake, and Nikolai worked together by cutting the tape that Henry and Shane were holding and pulling to get big pieces and constructing a volcano. To accomplish this task, they had to effectively communicate, and we see their social skills developing. Coming together as a class to finish a project that they came up with themselves helps to create a true classroom community. Using scissors at this age is so important because it helps to develop fine motor skills. These are skills we all need for things like brushing our teeth, using utensils, painting, coloring, or even getting dressed. With the opening and closing motion of cutting, it allows children to develop the small muscles in their hands. It also helps them determine which is their dominant hand. Using scissors also develops hand-eye coordination, because you have to use your eyes and hands in unison. Hand-eye coordination is also necessary for tasks such as catching and throwing a ball or eating with a spoon or fork. When children use scissors it requires them to use both the right and left sides of their body at the same time, developing bilateral coordination. This is because each hand performs its own task. One hand does the actual cutting while the other hand manipulates the paper, tape, play-dough etc... This is an essential skill in order to do things like wash dishes or buttoning a shirt. Lastly, using scissors takes concentration and attention to detail, which, as we know, is used in all aspects of life. We are continually impressed by their growth. Their abilities are always evolving and we feel so lucky to be a part of it. Today we had the Beit Issie Farmers Market. Thank you so much for all your generosity. Beit Issie Shapiro helps to provide innovative therapies and state-of-the-art services for children and adults across the entire range of disabilities, and we appreciate your generosity in supporting such an amazing cause.
