Dear Parents,
Although this week started off with heavy rain, we were so busy inside our classroom. On Monday, we continued to finish up our self-portraits and watercolor painting for those who were not here last week. We also explored painting with golf balls. Your children picked which color paint they wanted, squeezed it into the box where their paper was and got to shake it up, rolling the golf balls all around to make a beautiful design. Throughout the week, we expanded our expressions with our self-portraits. We used our loose materials (rocks and sand) to form the shape of our face and all the features we have. We talked about how we all look different from one another; how some people have different colored skin and hair, different shapes of their eyes, different smiles, some wear glasses, how we are different sizes, how some people are tall and some are short, etc. This all helped to tie in with our discussion about Martin Luther King Jr. and about how he had a dream, and what that dream consisted of. We discussed as a class what kinds of dreams each child had. Some were able to grasp the concept of what Martin Luther King Jr. did and they conveyed that in their dreams. Some of their dreams were to give love, be kind to others, give hugs and kisses, share, etc. For those that thought the dreams were just when we were sleeping, we explained how we can have dreams and wishes for people all around the world and encouraged them to think about what they think other people (and they) could do to make our world better. Our circle time continues to focus on the importance of being kind to one another, listening to our teachers and parents, learning how to spell our names and recognize our name when it is being verbally spelled. We are also trying to instill the values within your children about how it is okay to be different from others and that it is important to accept differences amongst one another. The idea that everyone is different from others is really what makes our world so beautiful. We can learn from our friends about what they like or how they might do something differently than we would, and that that is perfectly okay. We are all unique in our own way. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and Shabbat Shalom!
