This week we have continued to explore our unit on current events. We are mostly having discussions trying to understand all the questions that the children have. They really want to know more about volcanoes and how they work. Some ask questions such as, “Do volcanoes come in different shapes?” “Where does the lava come from?” The children know that it can be dangerous because the lava is hot, there is smoke, and it is stinky. We introduced the children to a globe and asked them to tell us what they see and what they think it is. They know that it is a planet, the planet earth that we live on. We showed the children how the continents are large pieces of land and that the earth is made of mostly water. We pointed to Los Angeles and then we showed them the Philippines. We compared the Philippines with the rest of the continents and the children saw that it was made of a small island. This led us to discuss how islands are made from volcanoes. Some children also told us that underground are plates that move and make earthquakes. We explained that, sometimes, when these plates move, they also can create volcanoes. We are beginning to make a volcano out of recycled materials. Next week we will continue to explore volcanoes in more detail. We are so excited to see and hear what the children discover. Shabbat boy next week is Ari.
