Dear parents,
As we returned to school on Tuesday, our holiday celebration was not over. We met in the temple to celebrate Simchat Torah which is a holiday all about dancing and rejoicing. The children got to have an up-close look at the Torah and danced all together. During this holiday we celebrate the Torah and what it represents for us. We had a discussion with the children about why we are dancing and rejoicing. We talk about the fact that during the year we read the Torah every week chapter by chapter and that when we finish, we celebrate, and we go right back to the beginning. We start reading the Torah all over again. We discussed that like many things in life, it is a circle that starts again, like a new year that begins on Rosh Hashana. We also had a special time with Rabbi Sari to look at the Torah up close. She explained to them what the yad is used to read and follow the Torah every week because our hands have special oils in them that can damage the parchment if touched too much. Which led us into a discussion about our senses. While exploring pumpkins during our group time, your children were wondering why some of the squashes have smooth skin while others have bumpy skin. This conversation led us to a new topic about the use of our five senses. We talked about our 5 senses and gave examples for each one. We then had a mindful silent snack so that the children might become aware of their senses, like seeing the different color, shapes, the noise it makes when they chew or the way different food taste or even how different food feel when you touch them with your fingers. It was nice to see the children become aware of things that happen all the time but that we do not really pay attention to. Please remember that next Thursday is early dismissal 11:45 and there is no school on Friday for parent-teacher conferences. If you have not signed up, you can still sign up online or by talking to us directly. Have a great weekend and shabbat shalom!
