This week, your children have been hard at work with their Hanukkah project and learning the songs in preparation for our Hanukkah party. The children are really excited and can’t wait for their grown-ups to come spend some time in their classroom on Wednesday December 18 at 9:15am.
We introduced to the children how a hanukkiah needs to look. Just like when we make a recipe, we need to follow directions. The hanukkiah needs to be in a certain way for it to be kosher. First, the candles need to be aligned in a straight line. Also, the Shamash which is the helper candle needs to be higher than the other candles. One child asked how to make a straight line when using the different shaped tiles. After a discussion it was decided that a block would be used as a guide to make sure our tiles would be straight. We also had to figure out how we would make our Shamash higher than the other candles. The children decided that they had to choose an extra tile to elevate the Shamash. Since we have been working on patterns, it came up during discussion that they should set up their candles in a pattern of their choice since they were given many different color and style of stones. We have been continuing to tell the story of Hanukkah, adding small details every time so that we can have a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the holiday. We are still focusing on standing up for ourselves as The Maccabees did as well as making our voices heard. We can see that the children are really applying this to their daily play and that they do stand up for themselves when they are in a conflict with a peer. To broaden our vertical work experiences the children can now weave with yarn on the wall. They are focusing on the task and the competencies needed to perform the skill, and they really seem to enjoy the challenge. Next week is an all school Shabbat so there is no Shabbat family. When we return to school after the break Andres will be Shabbat boy on January 10. Please remember that next Friday is a 1/2 day with an 11:45 dismissal. Shabbat shalom.
