Dear parents,
As we continued our study of Sukkot, your children learned about the etrog and the lulav, what they represent and why we use them during the holiday. We talked about the fact that when the etrog and the lulav are put together and we shake it all around we show that God is all around us. The long part of the lulav represents our spine, the myrtle leaf which is round represents our eyes and the willow leaf, which is oval represents our mouth. The etrog represents our hearts. When shaking the lulav and etrog we thank God with our entire body. Sukkot is a holiday when it is important to welcome guests in our sukkah and be joyous. We learned that the sukkah is built in a specific way, it has to have 3 walls, and Schach on the top, but we need to make sure we can see the stars through the leaves. On Tuesday, we went to visit our Sukkah and Rabbi Sari showed us how to shake the lulav. During yoga, Cheryl used the symbols of Sukkot to demonstrate yoga poses. We find it amazing that our yoga teacher has been incorporating the different Jewish holidays into her yoga class to enrich our children’s learning. We had an earthquake drill on Thursday which provoked a lot of questions from the children. Some wanted to know what to do if we were at home during an earthquake., do we also duck under the table? Some friends told us what they already knew about earthquakes, like going outside if your house is breaking down or going inside if there is an earthquake and you are outside. Some children were worried and wanted to know if there was an earthquake now. We showed the children how the earth moved and what happens when there is an earthquake. We also started our unit on fall and discussed the changes in weather, color in the leaves and harvest time. We have taken a nature walk where we collected leaves and sticks and noticed all the changes that were happening around our school. The children loved bringing fall items to the class and learning the differences and similarities of the gourds, pumpkins and squash.Thank you to all who brought them. We would also like to thank everyone for bringing in the fruits for the farmers market, the children enjoyed “Shopping” there. Shabbat shalom. Please remember that there is no school on Monday October 21.
