This week we focused all our attention on the great and powerful life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all he stood for and believed in. We talked about equality and friendship. We read many books about how important it is to be a good listener to others, be kind, and to treat others the way you would want to be treated. This sparked a project about working together, helping one another and teamwork. The children created beautiful paintings where they first planned what they were going to create. Then they grabbed their paint brushes and talked through their work. It was wonderful to see how nice they worked through this project, letting the other be a part of their creative process. We heard things like, “That’s a great idea!” “This is fun doing a project together.” “We are great friends!” Working together is pretty cool!” “Being kind is important.” After our big “rain storm” on Tuesday, many of the children came to school the next day and told us about the beautiful rainbow they saw. This became a very interesting subject to discuss. They were able to tell us that we needed the rain to come down and then the sun to come out to make a rainbow. In Room 9 we have a couple prisms. We walked upstairs by the gym and found some sun to look through the prisms and create our own rainbows. The kids were broken up into groups to again work together to find the sun at the right angle to make a rainbow. The smiles on their faces became big. When we returned to the room, a child found a book in our classroom that had a rainbow on it. We began to read it together and each of us learned something new!
