This week we were busy discussing the wonderful holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the birthday of the trees. The children talked about all the amazing things trees give us and the world. We heard the children say, “Trees give us oxygen.” “Trees give us fruit like apples, lemons and tangerines.” “We get paper, wood and also birds, owls and squirrels live in trees.” The class realizes how important and crucial trees are to the environment. They have even begun to use only one or two paper towels to dry their hands when washing because they know paper comes from trees! We started to discuss the parts of a tree and plant as well as the stages of how a tree and plant grow. We had the opportunity to “plant” our own lima beans in a baggie with cotton balls and water. We discussed what a seed needs to grow. They said, “seeds need water to grow.” “They also need lots and lots of sunlight.” We put our baggies on the window so that they are exposed to sunlight and we can watch it grow every day. We made predictions about what will happen to our seeds and how fast they will grow. One kid asked, “Can we use our magnified glasses to observe our seeds?” This will hopefully be an ongoing process where we can observe and have many discussions about how each of our seeds grow. The class has begun the beginning stages of our Speedometry study with Mattel. Next week we will start the first “experience with the class. We can’t wait to get started!
