Newsletter Room 9 January 27th - January 31st 2020
As we continued to discuss the holiday of Tu B’Shevat this week in Room 9, we asked the class: What do we celebrate on Tu B’Shevat? Everyone shouted, Trees! Evan said: “They grow more and more on this holiday.” Kayla added, “Yes, the more you get older, the more you grow older.” Then we asked, “Why do you think the Torah cares about Trees?” “Because it has stories and it has love,” said Kayla. Jacob added, “Trees give us honey from the flowers that have bees,” and Emma said, “Trees are important because when you put water on them, they grow.” We read a wonderful true story about an Ethiopian family travelling to Israel, called Yuri’s Candy Tree by Lesly Simpson. This story was about hardships on the way to Israel, but once there, the family found many candy trees (orange trees) everywhere. As we were finishing this discussion, we noticed that some of the children were having side conversations about what had been happening in the news this past Sunday. We decided to open up the conversation by asking if anyone had anything to share about the news. This truly opened a flood gate of words and emotions from the children. Suddenly everyone wanted to talk at once and hands shot up to talk. We went around and everyone had a chance to speak. It was clear that the children wanted and needed to talk about Kobe and we were there just to listen and validate and let them know that we care. It was truly a special moment, one where your children’s feeling were respected and listened to. They have not talked about this subject since, but if they do, we are here to listen. This week we went on a walk around our beautiful campus to explore the variety of trees that we have. The children were in awe to rediscover the beauty all around them and kept pointing out plants, trees, and shrubs. On the clipboards they carried with them, the children enjoyed drawing a tree of their choice while noticing the tree’s details such as it’s different parts, the bark’s texture, varieties of colors, tree sizes, etc. We had a chance to watch an informative video that explained how paper is made. It gave us information in an interesting and easy to understand way how we get paper from trees. We now know that we can be more mindful of the amount of paper we use and that we can recycle paper whenever we can. Thank you to Kayla’s mother, Elizabeth Barcohana for being our library reader this week. We enjoyed hearing two terrific books! We so enjoyed having Evan Gabbay’s family here to celebrate Shabbat with us on Friday. Thank you the Gabbay family joining Room 9 and making it so special.
