Newsletter Room 9 November 19th - November 22nd 2019
This week in Room 9 we continued our exploration of Thanksgiving and the Native American culture. As the children entered the classroom the centers were set up with intention to spark the children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm. Late last week, the class had gathered twigs on campus. On one table we put the twigs out for the children to create a “fire”. The teacher explained that it is important to put the twigs in different directions to allow the air to flow so that the ‘fire’ will burn hot. After the twigs were put down, glue was added. We discussed what color fire is and then the children put fire colored tissue paper down, which added to the realistic look. Patterns are all around us, in nature, on our clothes, in art, even in music. We posed the question, what is a pattern? Right away all the children excitedly yelled out some kind of apattern, pink blue, pink, blue, and Kayla said: “a pattern is to do something over and over again, repeating itself.” To encourage teamwork, we divided the class into pairs. Each child chose a colored cube and together they created a pattern and then presented that pattern to the class. Patterns is a component of Wise Learning Process. To deepen their understanding and to connect them to the Native American Culture, the children visited a center where they first noticed photos from nature showing patterns, for example: butterflies and zebras. The children were then able to create necklaces using natural objects such as wooden beads and leather. Many beaded their necklaces using patterns! After finishing their necklace, each child chose their own Native American name, by first deciding what they liked in nature and then what they liked about themselves or what they like to do.
