Newsletter Room 9 December 16th - December 20th 2019
This week in Room 9 the children in our class were so excited about our upcoming Hanukkah party. We rehearsed our songs and as they anticipated their parents hearing them sing, their voices soared! During the week we had a chance to do many things related to the holiday of Hanukkah. At one center we created a ‘provocation’ for the children to think about: It all started with a hand mixer on the table… None of the children paid attention to it at first. As they entered the class, they were excited to explore all the other centers. Finally, Emma proceeded to that table and asked: Can I do that? The teacher replied: what is that? Emma: I don’t know! Teacher: What do you need to do first? Emma: Wash my hands (She connected the activity with cooking) Ella also proceeded to the table: I washed my hands really well. Ella: (regarding the hanging question) we are going to mix something. Emma: This is math. We are going to make sticky slime. We are making here sticky slime. Teacher: Why do you think we are going to make sticky slime? Emma: because I want to… Teacher (Pointing at the mixer) what is this? Ella: I have something that looks like this but it not the same and it can mix. Teacher: What can we mix? Both girls: Slime, fruits, flour, eggs. Ella: Flour and sugar, it’s going to be delicious! We are going to make something delicious. And we did… We made dough for Hanukkah cookies. Math and science were a big part of it as we tried to determine the different sizes of the measuring cups and measuring spoons. We decided which one is the biggest, the smallest, in the middle. We explored what is a recipe and how to follow it. We counted quantities and observed what happens when we combine different ingredients. As the week unfolded, we continued to explore the story of Hanukkah, one of bravery and miracles. We asked the class to tell us what is a miracle? Evan: Something that you don’t think will happen, but it does. Emma: Something that happened a long time ago. Then we asked, what does it mean to be brave? Preston: If you’re scared of something, and you’re not scared anymore, that’s brave. Kayla: You need courage. When I wake up and I’m scared, I go back to sleep. We then asked the class: How can you be brave? Jacob: The first time I went into the pool I was scared, but I kept doing the swimming. Madison: When my daddy took me in the water with no floaties, I was brave. Kayla: When I first started to jump in the pool I was scared, but I had to do it with my floaties. I thought I would drown, but I didn’t. Evan: When Paloma was making a tunnel I was afraid to, but I did it. Preston: If I’m really scared of monsters I could punch them and kick them. Big thank you to Tiffany Gabbay for being our Library reader. We enjoyed listing to the stories Evan chose. Our Hanukkah Party was such a success! We loved having all of our families together and it was a joy to hear our class sing the Hanukkah songs. We wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday season and a happy new year! We can’t wait to see you in 2020!! Reminders: January 10 Shabbat Family Hanasab Family January 15 Library Family Partiel Family
