Newsletter Room 9 September 23rd - September 27th 2019
This week we continue to focus on the holiday of Rosh Hashanah. Along with discussing the holiday and its meaning, we talked about how each of us like to spend time with our families and friends during this special time of year. We brought up the word ‘community’ and asked the children what it means. Some thought it means love, others being kind. We talked about how community is all of that and more! It’s the closeness and caring we have for all those in our lives, such as our fellow students, our friends, teachers and families. We asked the class if they would like to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with other members of our community and every child in Room 9 very excitedly said yes. We decided to have a Rosh Hashanah celebration with Room 1, our Hebrew Immersion classroom, as a way to strengthen our community. The children in Room 9 made a beautiful invitation and dictated their words asking Room 1 to join us on Friday for our celebration. After everyone signed it, we brought it over to Room 1 and the children there were so happy and excited to receive it. During the week each child spent time creating a New Year’s card for their families. Each card contains the children’s thoughts and feelings about the holiday and about their love for their family. Much concentration and hard work went into these precious cards. We have been introducing the ‘Handwriting Without Tears’ program to the class. This is a developmentally based multi sensory program that pays particular attention to the needs of children who are learning to write. It invites active participation and purposeful discovery and play while facilitating a love of writing in a fun and stress-free environment. We began by introducing the children to wooden pieces made up of ‘big line and little lines, and big curves and little curves.’ These wooden pieces are the foundations of letters and numbers. The children immediately began manipulating the pieces into different letters, especially the first letter of their name! We then introduced the children to slates, which are small chalk boards, and chalk. Then the teacher held up a letter, and asked what letter is this? Then she demonstrated how to write it, starting at the top! All the children then joined in and wrote the letter on their own slate. They loved writing the letter, and enjoyed using the tiny sponges to wipe the slate clean, getting ready for the next letter.
