Newsletter Room 9 March 18th-March 22nd 2019
Our week started with sunshine and excitement for picture day. As all the children came in looking so adorable and dressed so beautifully, we could picture them at their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs! The photographers took the pictures among our beautiful trees and the children also sat for a class photo. At the sign-in table, the kids were so surprised to find their last names on sticks. They then had to match the letters. To our surprise they very quickly and easily identified their own last name and their corresponding letters. Many could even read their friends last name! Each child happily filled their decorated Misloach Manot bag with various kinds of treats that they gave to their classmate for Purim. The learning that happened while they were just having fun is a writing, math, organizational, and social, and emotional skill. Writing - they wrote on their bag who they are giving the gift to and who it is from. Math – they needed to identify the number of each item they are putting in the bag. For instance, they needed to put in 5 kisses so they needed to identify the number 5 and count it. Organizational skill – each item was in a separate bowl and the children had to move in an assembly line. Social skills – The children were paired with someone that might not have been their best friend, however they were happy to do it. While at the beginning of the year that might have been an issue, the children are learning that we all are friends and we need to respect each other’s feelings. The joy of giving to each other was so apparent and the friendships in our classroom are growing tighter. Emotional skills, the children were very happy to give and receive – learning that there is much joy in the act of giving. Thank you to the parents for bringing in so many wonderful treats for this special way of giving. Wednesday was the first day of spring. We talked about saying goodbye to winter and hello to spring. We asked the class: How can you tell that spring is here? Avery said: “It’s when flowers grow and dandelions grow.” Whitman said: “It’s when the seasons get hot.” Ryder said: “Spring is when flowers come up and they grow more.” We will discuss this season more in depth in the coming weeks. Thursday, the day of Purim, the entire Nursery School gathered together in the Sanctuary to celebrate Purim. We sang songs and heard the Megillah read by the 6th graders. We also saw a Purim play put on by the teachers who portrayed all the Purim characters! We had so much fun shaking our groggers when Hamens name was called. We loved going to the Library on Wednesday where we listened to Lemor, our wonderful Assistant Director, come in and read some books to our class. When we asked her if she could come and read to the class, she was so honored and excited to come. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day, Lemor! During our weekly Yoga class with Teacher Cheryl, we visited the city of Shushan. We learned various poses, such as the warrior pose, after brave Mordechai because he refused to bow, the star pose, after Queen Esther because she’s a star in her heart, the chair pose, for King Ahashverosh because he sits on a throne, and the baby pose, after Hamen because he was such a big baby. We had a blast! Thank you to the Denvir family for helping us celebrate Shabbat and Riley 5th birthday last Friday. We loved having you with us! Happy Birthday Riley!
