This week our class learned and explored our Jewish homeland, Israel. We discussed her cities, landmarks and especially what makes her so important to so many around the world. We spent the week preparing for our Israeli marketplace or “Shuk” where the Pre-K children were able to “purchase” olives and pickles, hummus and pita, oranges and watermelon and lemonade from Israel. We sang and danced to Israeli music and fun was had by all. Teacher Shoshi taught us an Israeli dance that was a really amazing experience. Room 9 kids made blue and white paper chains and a sign to decorate our shuk. Each class picked a city in Israel to focus on. Our class researched En Gedi and found out that there is a lot to do there. You can visit and hike Masada, have water hikes in En Gedi and visit the Dead Sea. We filled two bins with water. In one of the bins we poured a huge amount of salt inside. When the kids walked in, they all gravitated towards this table to see what we were about to do. They found their own items and put them inside each bin. We found out that the bin we labeled “Dead Sea” had all the items float on top! When something was put into the “Fresh Water” bin, sank to the bottom. Some of the kids did notice that items floated in the fresh water as well. We were able to have a conversation about items that are light in weight will float no matter what. We also got a chance to talk about the Dead Sea mud. We put it on our hands and talked about how it felt and spread it around on our hands. We waited awhile then washed it off. We discussed how soft our skin felt and how the minerals soaked into our skin and made it feel nice. We loved talking about Israel and enjoy learning together about such a wonderful place.
