Newsletter Room 9 May 20th-May 24th 2019
This week, our last full week in Room 9, we celebrated the holiday of Lag Ba ‘Omer. On this minor, but important Jewish holiday we talked about how the Jewish people wanted to study Torah, especially the children. The Roman soldiers forbade it and so the Jewish people needed to study in secret. In order to study the Torah, they pretended to be hunters, using bows and arrows. They would hike through the forests and every time the Romans drew near, the Jewish people would take out their bows and arrows. As soon as the Romans left, they went back to studying the Torah. They would study in caves, led by Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, where they were safe and cozy and able to study Torah in peace. The children in our class are now fascinated with caves. Because of this, we went to the library to gather books on caves. After reading them we discovered that there are many animals and insects that live in caves. Interesting rock formations are formed inside caves such as Stalactites and Stalagmites. There are many different types of caves, such as ocean caves, ice caves and lava caves. It is very fun to visit a cave. A quick google search suggested the following cave: Bronson Canyon / Caves Bronson Canyon, or Bronson Caves, is a section of Griffith Park in Los Angeles that has become known as a filming location for many movies and TV shows, especially westerns and science fiction, from the early days of motion pictures to the present. Of course, there are so many other caves near us. Expose your children to nature and have a great time together. In honor of Lag B ‘Omer the entire Pre-K participated in a picnic out on the patio. Rabbi Josh and Cantor Emma sang songs with us and told stories. Following the Israeli custom, we all ate delicious baked potatoes, yummy oranges and watermelon around our pretend bonfire. It was so fun and very delicious. As we approach the end of the year, with all the activities and events, it is very normal to observe the children having mixed emotions as they face the unknown. We have begun to talk and discuss our feelings and what we think about the future. We talked about how we felt the first day of Pre-K and we heard such feeling as: “I was nervous.” “I was excited.” “I was shy.” We read a few books and we will continue to have conversations about our feelings. We encourage you to have conversations with your child as well. We also had a chance to visit Room 66, one of the Kindergarten classes here at Wise School, to see what a Kindergarten class looks and feels like. We were all welcomed by Mrs. Lepp and all the kindergarten children. We joined them in their morning circle and saw that they do the calendar just like we do! We saw many similarities and a few differences and when we came back to room 9 we talked about it. Our class was super excited about our visit! We had a wonderful yoga class with Teacher Cheryl where we went to London, England. We did many poses, such as Big Ben which was tricky but great. We also went to our second to last P.E. class with Coach Danny. We’ve had such as terrific year with Coach and learned so much from him! Thanks, Coach! We loved celebrating Whitman’s 5th birthday on Monday. We had delicious cupcakes that he helped to bake, and everyone gave him a happy wish. Happy Birthday Whitman! The kids are so fascinated with the Wizard of Oz story. They have been acting out this wonderful story during our quiet time every day. They wrote down the story line and even made costumes to go with it. Kala, Sonny’s mom, was so gracious to come in and work with the class on putting the play together, doing warm up exercises and she even brought costumes! The kids loved it so much that she volunteered to come again. Thank you, Kala so very much! Reminders: No School Monday, May 27th Memorial Day Monday, June 3rd Closing Circle @ 9:15 a.m. Thursday, June 6th Pre-K Celebration
