Room 9 Newsletter November 12-16 2018
This week has been another busy and productive week in Room 9. Each child worked hard on their Thanksgiving journal page. They focused on drawing many different things they learned about the Native Americans. These included such things as a tee-pee, the tent- like structure where they slept with their families, a fire that they started using two pieces of wood rubbed together, and a Native American boy or girl. The children did a great job using all they learned to make their drawings come to life! Every morning as a class we sing the Modeh Ani, the song that means: I am thankful (specifically, we thank God for restoring our souls, but we teach it to the children under the idea of saying thank you for the new day). After we sing this meaningful song, we ask the class: What are you thankful for? Especially at this time of year, being thankful is an important concept to impart to the children. It was wonderful to hear what each child said: Hunter: I am thankful for money, costumes, my dad, my mom and everyone in my family. I am also thankful for my grandpa and grandma and their dog and my cousin's dog, too. It’s a German Shepherd. Liora: I am thankful for my mommy and my daddy and my sisters, because I love them so much. I am so thankful for my grandmas and grandpas and my cousins because I always go to their house. Adler: I am thankful for Miles, mommy and daddy and my dog Paddington. I am also thankful for my toys. Jordan: I am thankful for Sonny, Hunter, Sarah, Riley and Adler. I am also thankful for Mimi, my mom and my dad and my brother. I’m also thankful for Adler’s pictures that he draws for me. Whitman: I am thankful for my brother, my mom, my dad, my grandmas and my grandpas, but they died. I am also thankful for my toys, my costumes and that’s it. Riley: I am thankful for my family like my sisters, my mom and dad and my nana. I am also thankful for my toys and my stuffed animals. Jake: I am thankful for Riley and teacher Linda, mommy and daddy, Max and baby Benny. I am also thankful for my bed and my animals. Ryder: I am thankful for my mommy and daddy and my brother Hudson. I am also thankful for my toys, my buckets and my books. Sarah: I am thankful for my dad and my mom and my brother. I am also thankful for Jordan and Adler and Ryder. They are my good friends. Avery: I am thankful for my sister, Taylor and mommy and daddy and grammie and grandpa. I also am thankful to donate a toy then I can buy a toy. I am thankful for my toys, too. Isabella: I am thankful for Pocahontas and for Jonathan, my brother and mommy and daddy. I’m also thankful for water and playing with my dolls. Sonny: I am thankful for my sister, my mommy and daddy and my brother. I am thankful for them because I like them. I am also thankful for G-d. In many of the pictures throughout our newsletter you might notice that your children are playing again and again in our block area. What are the benefits of manipulating blocks you might ask? Block play requires fine and gross motor skills, enhances children’s problem- solving abilities, uses math skills by balancing and measuring and improves language abilities. It also strengthens social and emotional growth by helping children learn to take turns, share, develop friendships, be creative, problem solve, increase their attention span, cooperate and develop self-esteem. Reading is a big part of our classroom. We are always reading books in Room 9 and discovering new authors, illustrators and wonderful and exciting stories that highlight subjects of interest. Thank you for having your child bring in their favorite book from home. We asked the children: What is a character from a book? Whitman said: “A character is someone you want to be.” Adler said: “A character is when you wear costumes.” Sonny said: A character is when you dress up in a costume.” Hunter said: “When you’re pretending to be someone else.” We asked the children to bring in their favorite book from home. We had many of the children bring in books! They were: The Salamander Room, Pinkalicious, The Incredible Hulk and If I Didn’t Have You. We can’t wait to see more favorite books as they come in! This week the class made hallah from scratch using yeast as a starter to make the dough rise. Using a recipe is a wonderful way for children to start to recognize different measuring utensils and how to follow a recipe from start to finish. It is also a Wise Learning Process project by seeing the ‘change over time.’ The children can see the difference in the dough from the time it first gets the yeast until the time after it’s risen. Thank you Peterson Family for being our first Shabbat Family. Our next Shabbat family is the Flamm family on November 30. We would like to ask you to also send lunch with your child on that day. Monday Nov. 26th will be school-wide pajama day.
