Newsletter Room 9 December 10-14th 2018
This week in room 9 we have been focusing on what makes each one of us special and unique. We first asked the class: What comes to your mind when you think about - ‘all about me.’ “The person you are.”-Whitman “The person your name is.”-Hunter “The same skin.”-Whitman “We have different color hair and different color eyes.”-Sonny “We have different communities. We all live in different houses and have families.”-Riley “We all have different fingernails.”-Jordan “We all have different handprints.”-Sonny “We have different mommies and daddies. -Sarah “And different Grandmas and Grandpas.”-Riley “We have different shoes.”-Whitman “We have different voices.”-Riley The next day we explained to the class that we would be starting to make self-portraits. We talked about the parts of a face and where each belong in relation to one another. Every child looked in a mirror and study their face to really see their own reflection and be able to draw it. The results are just beautiful. Please take a look! The following day the teacher asked each child individually questions about themselves for their autobiography. This was typed up and put under their portrait. This unit will continue as we talk about our different and unique families, both immediate and extended, about our bodies and how we take care of ourselves. This week the class also made Hallah from scratch using fresh eggs and yeast. They loved making it and putting all the ingredients in as a team. The children used all their five senses during the process. They also were using math skills as they were counting and measuring. They exercised patience waiting for their turn. We’ve noticed that the children are becoming more independent, are interacting in a more mindful way and are such a caring community, just like an extended family. This week we focused on the letter ‘Hh’. The children were abuzz with all kinds of words that start with an H. We heard: Handkerchief, hammer, hat, hills, helicopter, hippo, Hulk, help, and hi. We learned how to write both an upper and a lowercase H and we will continue these important skills.
