This week we went on a nature walk around school. The children really enjoyed exploring the campus and searching for signs of fall. They collected leaves from the ground, as well as seed pods, bark, carob and pine cones. When we returned to the class, they sorted what they had collected into different baskets.
Then, using our items from nature, we created fall patterns. The children were able to pick from the variety of materials and make the patterns their very own. We also had a discussion about fall. We discussed the four seasons, specifically fall and the signs of that season. We also learned why the leaves change color. They were very amazed to learn how the leaves turn from green to orange or red. We presented the children with “a puzzlement,” which is part of Wise Learning Process. This puzzlement featured scenery of children playing outside on a fall day. The children were asked to look at the picture and observe its details. Then they asked questions about the picture and thought about what the picture was telling us. This process allowed us to not only introduce the beginning of the season, but also, to introduce the children to the difference between a question and a statement, work on our observation skills and critical thinking.
