This week way pretty exciting!
We started our 5th grade buddy program. We had lunch with the fifth grade and it was amazing to see the children interact and make new relationships. Some children were able to see older siblings or cousins as well as meet new people. We then had the pleasure to meet with all of you. It was great to hear what you think of your children and what you feel they are learning. We’d like to thank you all for taking the time to come and sit with us. We love your children and it is important to be able to touch base with the families. Shabbat Shalom. Anne and Vera. This week we went on a nature walk around school. The children really enjoyed exploring the campus and searching for signs of fall. They collected leaves from the ground, as well as seed pods, bark, carob and pine cones. When we returned to the class, they sorted what they had collected into different baskets.
Then, using our items from nature, we created fall patterns. The children were able to pick from the variety of materials and make the patterns their very own. We also had a discussion about fall. We discussed the four seasons, specifically fall and the signs of that season. We also learned why the leaves change color. They were very amazed to learn how the leaves turn from green to orange or red. We presented the children with “a puzzlement,” which is part of Wise Learning Process. This puzzlement featured scenery of children playing outside on a fall day. The children were asked to look at the picture and observe its details. Then they asked questions about the picture and thought about what the picture was telling us. This process allowed us to not only introduce the beginning of the season, but also, to introduce the children to the difference between a question and a statement, work on our observation skills and critical thinking. Shabbat shalom, Anne and Vera Reminders: -Wednesday and Thursday October 28 and 29 parent -teacher conferences. Wednesday October 28: 12pm dismissal Thursday October 29: no school What an other amazing week here at school!!!!
We have started learning about patterns. The children now can recognize that a pattern is "something that repeats itself". They are able to give examples of patterns like blue, red, blue, red. Furthermore, we are learning that patterns can be more than just a color pattern. We need to look at the item in its detail to be able to recognize what kind of pattern we are looking at, it could be a size pattern, a color, a kind of animal or a species. The children are now starting to identify patterns all around based on the details they see. The children are building strong connections with each other and it is really nice to observe. Shabbat Shalom Anne and Vera This week was all about the Torah. We started our week by going to the temple on Tuesday to attend service for Simcha Torah. The 5th and 6th grade students unrolled the Torah and the children were fascinated by its length. Since it is so long the children were able to understand why it take a long time to read the whole Torah. We explained that every Shabbat we read a part of the Torah and it takes us one year to read it all. We also learned that on Simcha Torah we roll the Torah back to the beginning and we start reading it again, every time we read it again we learn new things that we did not understand before because maybe we were too young. This lead us to ask the question: " What is in the Torah?" There is mainly stories, and holidays. We learned that the Torah also helps us know how to behave with others by telling us about the ten commandments. |
