It has been a ton of fun in room 3 this week! Hanukkah brings out the creativity in the children by collaborating arts and crafts with this exciting holiday. We made our own menorahs by collecting colored cubes, sea shells, and mini wooden blocks. The children chose a pattern of their choice to sort, build, and glue together their own hanukkiot. Students understand the meaning of a “Maccabee” and the depth of leadership. Each child made their own headband out of poster board to resemble the shields that the Maccabees wore in order to protect themselves. The children are filled with facts and songs about Hanukkah and are constantly discussing the history of this miraculous holiday. Students are making connections between Hanukkah and other things we do as a community. For example, the children recognize 8 candles (9 including the Shamash) on the hanukkiah for Hanukkah, and 2 candles total on the candlesticks for Shabbat. Children are also differentiating the foods we eat on specific holidays. For example, they connect latkes with Hanukkah and turkey with thanksgiving. They are able to identify the purposes of each role/object.
Big thanks to Firoozeh and Shahrzad for reading stories to the children at the library this week. We are looking forward to celebrating together at our Hanukkah party on Tuesday, December 16 @ 11:30 a.m. Have a great weekend and Shabbat Shalom to all of our friends!
