This week Room 9 was so busy exploring and discovering. We made fresh orange/grapefruit juice using a juicer. First the children measured the circumference of the fruit and noticed that the grapefruit is larger around than the orange. Other similarities and differences appeared. At group time we discussed these similarities and differences. The children were able to pass around each fruit and quickly started to describe them, “They are both round.” “They are both fruit.” “They both roll.” “They are both a circle.” “They are both bumpy.” “They both smell good.” “They both have seeds.” “They both grow on trees.” It was interesting to see that the children could come up with similarities that were outside of the room such as, “they both grow on trees”, because that is not right there in front of them. After our discussion, we all got to taste the juice and it was delicious.
We also continued our unit of “Construction.” We welcomed a speaker to Room 9. His name is Itay, and he is a contractor. He came in with a hard hat, a construction vest and a roll of blueprints. The class was amazed the second he started talking. Their hands flew up with questions for him and things to share about their own houses. They talked about the shapes they see in houses, and they were able to share everything they already knew about blueprints and measuring. They asked, “What does a contractor do?” “What do you build?” They also told him information that they already knew about construction when he used some key words we have been using. They shared, “Houses are made out of wood, bricks, cement and even dirt and marble.” “A foundation makes a house strong and straight so it doesn’t fall down.” We were so lucky that we had such an amazing experience of someone who could come and share their work and knowledge with us.
