Room 9 Newsletter January 14-18 2019
This week was a busy one, although, unfortunately many of our classmates were home sick. We wish everyone a speedy recovery! We continued to discuss Tu B'Shevat, the new year of the trees. We decorated discs with acrylic paint which we then decorated with beads. The children will hang them from a tree on the Pre-K yard in honor of this holiday. We again talked about the importance of trees in our lives. We discussed how trees give us shade, wood, oxygen, fruit and paper. We are eager to take our beautiful hanging discs and ‘give’ them to the trees as a gift for all the wonderful things trees give to us. The teachers brought in a bunch of earthworms and put them out on a table as a puzzlement. Some of the children were very curious and some were not. At first, some were even repulsed! We heard comments such as: “So weird!” “It’s disgusting. “I’m scared to pick them up.” “Guys! Be gentler with them” “They eat bugs” “Should I touch them?” “Yes”, “yes”, “yes” “They poop.” “this one is crawling” “What are they?” - “worms.” “yukky” “I don’t want to do it. It’s bad” “It’s good for me.” “I’m not going to touch the King.” “Why did they bring worms into the classroom?” “they look good.” “what is that (pointing at a small stick in the dirt)?” He replies: “that’s a rock”, “That’s a worm" "that's the King” “Look! I like worms” “These worms are good, they can wiggle.” Others went right up and held some in their hand! We read a book called Wonderful Worms where we learned many interesting facts about earth worms. We learned that they don’t bite because they have no teeth, and they make the dirt extra rich and filled with air making the dirt good for planting. We have learned to love and appreciate earthworms! This week we also spent time discussing the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The children had already noticed his large portrait hanging in our room and knew his name. We talked about how he believed that everyone should be treated fairly and equally. He believed that war was not the answer. He made us believe that we could change the world for the better. We asked the class: How can we make the world a better place? Hunter said: “by doing nice stuff.” Whitman said: “by treating people fairly.” Avery said: “you can treat people nice like if you go to grandpa and grandma you can treat them nicely.” Jake said: “by helping people.” Sarah said: “by cleaning up the world.” Ryder said: “you could make everything calm and nice.” Sonny said: “by being kind.” Jordan said: “by playing differently, kind and Nice.” Isabella said: “by making and planting a new Tree.” Our discussions about Dr. King were wonderful and heartfelt. We also read a book about him called Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Which prompted even more conversations. Reminders: Please make sure your child has a full change of clothes.
