Newsletter for Room 9 January 7th -11th 2019
This week we welcomed each of our families back from winter break. We missed you all so much and it was great to see how much the children have grown! Each child had a lot to say about all the fun things they saw and did while with their families. We heard many details and descriptions. As a class, each child spent time drawing a picture for their journal depicting something they did over the winter break. We heard stories of Hawaii, Disneyland, the desert, the park and of playing soccer. We also heard tales of staying cozy at home and making a fire in the fireplace while also going to a birthday party. It was fun listening to all the wonderful and heartwarming stories of family togetherness. We introduced the holiday of Tu’Bishvat to the class. The class already knew about the upcoming holiday because they saw the ‘clues’ around the classroom from the beautiful pictures of trees to all the wonderful books about trees. We asked the children: Why are trees important to us? Whitman answered: “They make paper.” Jake said: “They make us breathe.” Sonny said: “Because they are pretty.” Riley said: “They give us shade.” Ryder said: “Because they grow.” Hunter answered: “Like we do!” Since we use paper daily and many in the class are fascinated with the fact that paper comes from trees, we wanted to delve a little deeper into just how paper is made. We decided as a class to find out. We researched on the computer and found a short clip and we all watched it. It showed from start to finish how paper is made. The children were very interested and focused. After watching the online clip, we heard questions like “how do we get colored paper?” and “Can we recycle paper?” It made us all think even more that paper is precious, and trees are so important to the world! The next day we discussed the parts of a tree. We asked the class: What are the parts of a tree? Sonny said that the bark is like the tree’s skin. Whitman said that the roots grow under the ground. Avery said that the trunk is the big part of the tree. Isabella likes the leaves and Riley likes the branches. During music, Maestro came to our class since it was raining. We had an awesome time once again using the bells to make music! The children really noticed how each bell could make a different note and working together as a team could produce a song. We visited the library where we heard two terrific books read by Elizabeth Barcohana, Hunter’s mommy. We enjoyed our time there so much...thank you both! We enjoyed having Jake and Jake’s mom, Rachel join us for Shabbat this week as Jake was Shabbat boy and was celebrating his 5th birthday! It was a double celebration and we loved having it. Reminders: Shabbat: 1/18 No Family Library Reader: 1/23 Atias Family No School: 1/21 MLK Day
